ruinous-existence:

1. Not everyone on tumblr who says they have DID is lying.

2. “Fictives” (I hate that word, so I use fictional introjects) ARE a thing, but they’re not as common as people make them seem. If someone has fictional introjects, don’t assume they’re faking. If they have all fictional introjects, be suspicious.

3. Having more than 10 parts (aka alters) is quite common. There are people who have hundreds or even thousands. That’s not as common, but it happens. Usually with organized abuse. Number of parts doesn’t indicate if someone is lying about having DID or OSDD-1.

4. DID and OSDD-1 are trauma disorders. They form from chronic childhood trauma. A one time event will not cause DID. Trauma can mean bullying, it can mean sexual abuse, emotional abuse, invasive medical procedures, and much more. Trauma =/= abuse. Abuse is trauma, but not all trauma is abuse.

5. Call-out posts are stupid.

6. About 94% of people with DID have covert DID. That means most people would not know if someone had DID if they were not trained to look for it or the person with DID told people they have it.

7. Overt DID is a thing, even if it’s uncommon. United States of Tara is an example of overt DID. Most people do not act like Tara. If they do, that doesn’t mean they are faking, it’s just less common to have overt DID due to how and why it’s formed.

8. When a system is stressed, recently diagnosed, or otherwise shaken up, “possession” switches are more likely to happen, even if they are usually covert. This doesn’t happen to everyone, but it’s not uncommon.

9. The majority of psychology courses in colleges and universities either don’t talk about DID at all or contain lots of misinformation. DID is not rare. About 1-3% of the population has DID. See number 6 for why people think DID is rare. Don’t take the professor’s (or textbook’s) word when it comes to more “serious” or “scary” disorders (DID, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and the like). There are lots of professors who even get information on eating disorders and depression wrong. Professors aren’t all knowing. They often are judgmental and teach personal opinions, which are not fact. Do your own research if you want to be informed.
That’s not to say they are intentionally spreading misinformation, they are just ignorant to others reality.

10. If you think someone on the internet is faking DID, get over it. Nothing good will come of “calling them out” or arguing with them. Most of the time they will call you ableist, block you and/or up the anti.
You also can not know for sure if someone is lying about DID over the internet. There are obvious examples of fake systems, but when someone tells them that  their “alters” don’t make sense, they won’t reconsider their “system”. They’ll just throw a fit, dox you (yeah, it happens, sadly), send their friends to harass you, or some other unproductive and potentially dangerous reaction. If someone isn’t abusing another person, leave it alone. It sucks, but there’s nothing someone on tumblr can do to help them see reason. It’s not your job to weed out “fake” systems.

Tl;dr Tumblr sucks, DID is real, get over yourself, take a chill pill (or drink some of that nuerobliss and chill out).
